Synopsis: Rachel Reynolds is the daughter of a scientist and a poet, so her beliefs on Creation and Karma and all those other mythical things are varied. But when one passionate night with Tripp, the boy she’s loved her entire, life leads to heartache and a poorly chosen moment with another boy, whom she barely knows let alone loves, which then leads to a baby, she’s pretty sure Karma or no, the universe is a real biatch.
Now, Rachel is getting ready to graduate from high school, and while balancing college applications, mommyhood, and the greater question of where this is all leading her in the future, Rachel also makes the discovery that she isn’t over her first love… and he isn’t over her. But the timing, oh the timing. As Rachel tries to navigate through the possibilities of a relationship with Tripp, a nightmare from two years ago reappears in her life and threatens the already shaky balance she’s worked long and hard for, causing Rachel to wonder if one night from her past will forever control her future.

The Review
This book really surprised me – the story was very well written, our protagonist was sassy and fiercely independent, I adored the love interest, Tripp, and the obvious theme of teenage pregnancy was very well handled and thought provoking. While the story focuses on Rachel, we also get an insight into many of the supporting characters, and I would highly, highly recommend this read (especially for the ridiculous price of less than £2 currently on Amazon UK!).
I’ve read a couple of teen pregnancy stories, and rarely do I feel that they’re handled as honestly as they are in Life Interrupted. The story could, at times, be uplifting and thought-provoking, but it was also very emotional and touched on some things that felt very real. I’m not sure if the author has first-hand experience of teen-pregnancy, or if this was just very well researched – but Rachel, and for that matter all of the characters in this book, felt like people you would know – they were relatable for a variety of different reasons.
The story is told by Rachel from the point of view of her life now, and with flashbacks of the events leading up to the present. This was a really great way to tell the story, it held my interest and drip-fed me information that helped to make the present more understandable. There were a few twists and turns I wasn’t expecting, that made this a gripping read, I really cared about the protagonist, I whooped, cheered, smiled, got butterflies and wanted to cry right along with her.
Rating
3.5/5
I found it difficult to give this book a solid rating. There is humour peppered throughout the story and it really is very well written – I’d like to try more by this author. The love interest, Tripp, *sigh* what can I say about him without giving too much away? Yes, at times the romance should have verged on cheesy. but somehow it didn’t, he’s a great character – if very mature for 18. Overall, a great read not to be missed!
About the Author:
Mom, Wife, Coffee Addict, and Book Lover – I am a writer of YA/NA contemporary novels. I write about those crazy ages of 18-23 because there is nothing scarier than being told to grow up and decide what to do with your life and who to be so suddenly. I write about love because it’s my belief that love, in one form or another, saves us all at some point in our lives. I am married to a man who understands and believes in me, and mother to a beautiful baby girl and a neurotic Great Dane Puppy.
